The Conservation Seedling Nursery sells seedlings through two programs. The Annual Sale and Contracts.

The Annual Sale is a “first come, first serve” seedling sale for conservation and restoration projects. Ordering begins in January for Spring pick up/ delivery.

Customers seeking 500 - 1,000+ seedlings of an individual species are encouraged to join our Contract program. Utilizing the Contract program for large orders ensures we can provide you with genetically fit seedlings for your planting area and guarantees you'll receive the quantity of seedlings needed for your project.

1. The first step to placing an order with MCSN is to decide if your planting is considered conservation.

What is Conservation? Our seedlings must be used for a conservation project. A conservation project is any planting that enhances or improves the natural environment for the health of the land or the species that inhabit it.

Conservation projects include but are not limited to - Post-fire restoration, windbreak/ shelterbelts, reforestation, reclamation of former forest land, species diversification, restoration (of all habitat types), afforestation, logging, Christmas tree farm (forest products), to increase forest health/ resilience, reclaim denuded lands, improve wildlife habitat mobility/ connectivity, wildlife/ pollinator habitat, mitigate effects of climate change, ensure regeneration of desired species, reduce soil loss/ erosion, increase canopy cover.

When you place your order you will need to describe your conservation project/ intended purpose for the seedlings.

**WE WILL BE IMPLEMENTING A NEW ORDERING PORTAL** - Customers will be able to place their own order and receive confirmation in real time that the order has been placed, and will also be able to see a live inventory of how many units per product are available. Please, be patient as we update our website leading up to the seedling sale start date. All information on how to order will be provided with plenty of lead time before the sale begins.

For now, research what plant species will do best at your property and stay tuned for more information! If you sign up for the newsletter you will receive a notification when new information becomes available.

Choosing Plant Species: If you’re unsure about which plant species to order, refer to our Catalog & Resources page.

• The catalog will provide you with information about each available plant species and the conditions required for them to thrive. This resource will help you determine what will grow well in your area. If you need further assistance, your local county conservation district or extension office are great resources. Some county conservation districts/ extension offices can help you place your order.

• Additional resources are also available that have plant species recommendations for pollinators, wildlife, drought & cold hardy, deer 'resistant', alkaline soil, riparian habitats and shelterbelts/ windbreaks plantings. Refer to the Catalog & Resources page linked above in blue text. (If there are additional recommendations you would like to see on our website, please email them to mtnursery@mt.gov)

• If you need additional assistance picking plant species, please contact your county Conservation District or Extension Office. The professionals in your county will know what grows best, and what pest/ diseases you should be aware of (better than we will!).
