Federal Excess Personal Property Program

Through the Federal Excess Personal Property Program (FEPP), the DNRC Division of Forestry in cooperation with the United States Forest Service is able to acquire vehicles and equipment on loan which are used to support the State and County Cooperative Fire Programs.  The Division of Forestry has been using federal excess property since 1967 to offset costs (over $50 million) in supporting the Department's Fire Program. By acquiring vehicles and equipment through the FEPP program, the DNRC Division of Forestry realizes tremendous cost savings compared to the cost of purchasing new or comparable used equipment and vehicles.

From the Equipment Development Center To State/County Cooperative Programs

The MT DNRC Division of Forestry, Equipment Development Center (EDC) and Support section is responsible for screening, retrieving, reconditioning, inventorying and assigning Federal Excess Personal Property (FEPP).

Repairs and modificatons are made to vehicles at the EDC to bring vehicles and equipment up to current safety standards and make them suitable for use by State and County Cooperative fire programs.

Currently the counties have over 400 pieces of equipment that our EDC has developed. 90% of these vehicles originated as federal excess property and have been transformed into usable vehicles. Type 6 fire engines are the main vehicles used and developed for the counties from federal excess property.  Below are some of the vehicles and equipment prior to and after development.  For more information see our Equipment Development Center web page.
